Quitting meat — cold turkey

A few years ago, Rin hit me with something from which I’ve never fully recovered.

“I think I’m going to be a vegetarian,” she said.

I thought it was a phase. My wife who loved cheeseburgers, valued the perfect steak, ate bacon with abandon, demanded ham at Thanksgiving, and indulged in my pork steaks, decided to shun one of the four basic food groups — and cast aside a small, but terribly important, component of our relationship. My failure (and a poem)

Something happened this past weekend that I didn’t expect. Despite the buffer of ten years of life and the fact that I have absolutely no direct connection to the devastation of Sept. 11, 2001, I was overcome with emotion.

Just like those days ten years ago, I couldn’t pull away from the television. Not because I was waiting to see what happened next — we’ve all seen the same images and videos replayed over and over on the anniversaries — but because I was battling guilt. Guilt that I’d abandoned the resolve that gripped us all in weeks and months following the devastation. Guilt that I abandoned the memory we as a country swore would never be forgotten.

Hot Topic: Vegetarianism

This week’s hot topic debate is vegetarianism.

One of us is a vegetarian. I’ll give you a hint: it’s not me.

For the past eleven years, I can honestly say that our top disagreement category is food. In fact, our first argument as a married couple took place in a grocery store. The subject? Expired eggs. The result? Flying ham and a clean refrigerator. (You don’t even want to know. Or you might?)

So, tune in this Friday. Find out who thinks what about a very controversial subject.

I’m really not too worried about this one, though. I already know I’m right.
