When people suck

Nearly eight years ago, Eric and I were hurt by someone. We were talking to a wise friend who told us something that we still remember to this day. “People will always disappoint you, but God never will.”

People do disappoint. We are mankind; it’s what we do.

As I am writing this, I am watching an Angels player hit in the home run derby. This player used to play for the St. Louis Cardinals and I would say he was one of the biggest sporting disappointments of my baseball-obsessed life.

Anyway, back to my point. People are going to suck. We are all jackwagons in our humanness. As a follower of Christ I am to die to my buttheadedness and let Christ live through me. He is not a putz. He is the opposite. He is love.

When people were mean to Him, He loved. When lies were spread about Him, He just continued to speak the truth. When familial relationships did not live up to their potential in his human lifetime, He appeared to his brother in His glorified state. To redeem him.

People will always disappoint, but God never will.

I found myself thinking about mean, sucky people. I sometimes wonder why they get to keep going, like a storm, leaving hurt and havoc in their wake. Why do they get to live when good people like my dad have to die?

I knew the answer as soon as I thought it. My father would say, “Because God is giving them every chance possible to turn to Him.” I can almost hear him saying it.

God is gracious. I may not be, but He is……and I am glad. Because sometimes I can be a major jackwagon myself.
